The Minister of Internal Affairs, Catalin Predoiu, sent a message on Thursday on the occasion of the Prefect's Institution Day, showing that, currently, the role of the prefect is more important than ever, because in the territory it is seen most quickly whether ''the state is functioning or not, whether it is present or absent, whether it is orderly or vulnerable''.
"For 162 years, the Prefect's Institution has represented the government in the territory and remains one of the essential structures through which the Romanian state asserts its authority, applies the law and maintains its administrative coherence at the local level. In Romania in 2026, the role of the prefect is more important than ever. It is in the territory that one sees most quickly whether the state is functioning or not, whether it is present or absent, whether it is orderly or vulnerable. In a period marked by budgetary pressures, the need for better absorption of European funds, increasing expectations from citizens and the obligation to maintain functional public services, the prefect has a direct responsibility in maintaining the administrative capacity of the state," the minister said, according to a statement sent to AGERPRES.
He emphasized that the prefect does not exercise a "decorative" function, given that he represents the government at the local level, having as his responsibilities the management of decentralized public services, monitoring the application of the law, implementing public policies, as well as an essential role in the control of legality and in the management of emergency situations.
"All these duties have only one real stake: the state's ability to function coherently and credibly towards the citizen. The function of prefect requires professionalism, balance, institutional loyalty, discernment and firmness. It requires authority exercised within the limits of the law, administrative seriousness and the ability to act clearly when the situation requires it. Where state institutions function well in the territory, the citizen feels this directly: in administrative order, in the response to emergencies, in the coordination of public services, in the respect of the law," Predoiu pointed out.
According to him, the Prefect Institution is one of the support points of the Romanian state.
"Not only the good administration of the territory depends on the solidity of this institution, but also the citizen's trust that the state is capable of exercising its responsibilities with seriousness, continuity and authority. On the occasion of the Prefect's Institution Day, I convey to the prefects, sub-prefects and all the staff in the prefectures my appreciation for the activity carried out in the public service. I wish you strength to work, clarity in decision-making and the strength to exercise your duties with balance, authority and a sense of duty", was the minister's message
