Labour Minister Florin Manole said on Thursday that the government has adopted the so-called "solidarity package", under which more than 2.8 million pensioners will receive financial support in 2026, in two instalments, in May and December.
"Today, in the government meeting, we adopted an emergency ordinance - the so-called solidarity package - a piece of legislation that provides a series of financial benefits for low-income pensioners, increases support for various categories of vulnerable families with one or more children, as well as raises the benefits granted to children with disabilities in Romania. As regards support for pensioners, more than 2.8 million pensioners will receive financial aid this year," Manole said at the Victoria Palace of Government after the cabinet meeting.
He added that pensioners receiving pensions of up to 1,500 lei will be granted support of 1,000 lei, paid in two instalments - one in May and one in December, alongside their pensions for those months. Pensioners with pensions between 1,501 and 2,000 lei will receive 800 lei, also in two instalments - 400 lei in May and 400 lei in December. Those with pensions between 2,001 and 3,000 lei will receive 600 lei, paid in two equal instalments, again in May and December.
"As I mentioned, this concerns more than 2.8 million pensioners - a very large number of citizens, people with low pensions not because they did not work or contribute, but because they retired during periods when wages in Romania were very low. And I think this is an important point to underline, because the term 'vulnerable', as they have often been labelled, has, I would say, affected the dignity of these people who have worked and contributed in Romania," Manole said.
