Prime minister Marcel Ciolacu sent his condolences on Saturday to the families of the victims of the attack at the Christmas fair in Magdeburg, Germany.

"We send our condolences and our thoughts are with the families of the victims of the tragic attack at the Christmas market in Magdeburg. We also wish a speedy recovery to all those injured. The Romanian Government stands in solidarity with its German friends and allies," Ciolacu wrote a post on the Government's account on the X platform.

Between 60 and 80 people were injured and at least two people died after a car drove into a crowd at a Christmas market in the northern German city of Magdeburg on Friday.

The suspect is already in police custody. He is a doctor in his 50s who lives and works in Bernburg, a city south of Magdeburg, said the premier of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff.

The suspect is originally from Saudi Arabia, but has been in Germany since 2006 and has permanent residency. AGERPRES
