Romania remains a defender of the democratic values that Europe shares with the U.S., Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Friday.

''Romania remains a defender of the democratic values that Europe shares with the U.S. All Romanian authorities are committed to organizing free and fair election by empowering citizens and guaranteeing the freedom to vote,'' the Prime Minister wrote on the X platform.

On Friday, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, accused the U.S.'s European allies of censoring freedom of speech and undermining democratic values, in a speech at the Munich Security Conference, Reuters, DPA and AFP agencies report, criticizing in this regard the position of a former European Commissioner who welcomed the cancellation of the presidential elections in Romania.

''I was struck that a former European commissioner went on television recently and sounded delighted that the Romanian government had just annulled an entire election. He warned that if things don't go as planned, the very same thing could happen in Germany too. These cavalier statements are shocking to American ears. (...) When we see European courts canceling elections and senior officials threatening to cancel others, we ought to ask whether we're holding ourselves to an appropriately high standard. In fact, we must do more than talk about democratic values, we must live them now,'' the U.S. vice president indicated.
