Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Friday, regarding the appointments to the heads of the Prosecutor's Offices, that this subject was not discussed in any coalition meeting, recalling that the Minister of Justice, Radu Marinescu, initiated the procedure, having this competence, and he cannot start from a premise of "suspicions" in this case.
"This subject was not discussed in any coalition meeting. (...) I saw the data that was in the press, but since I am not an expert on our justice system, I am referring to people, apart from those with whom I collaborated, as a result of the positions I held, as interim president for several months or as prime minister, I do not actually know this data and I cannot make assessments about people if I do not know them," Bolojan explained on Europa FM.
According to the Prime Minister, Radu Marinescu initiated this procedure and will carry it out according to legal provisions.
"Mr. Marinescu is the Minister of Justice and has this mandate and we will see what the result will be. (...) He is the Minister of Justice and has this competence. (...) I cannot start from a premise of suspicions, because it would not be correct," said Ilie Bolojan, asked if Radu Marinescu is credible considering that he is accused of plagiarism.
The Prime Minister reiterated that he tries to judge ministers by what they do. "I try to judge ministers by what they do. (...) Every man will be held accountable for what he did, we have discussed this before. The plagiarism accusation that was leveled at Mr. Marinescu referred to what he did during the period when he had no, let's say, public accountability, I understand that this plagiarism accusation is being verified or will be verified by the Ethics Commission at the University of Craiova, where he received his doctorate, and if the Social Democratic Party, the party that supports Mr. Minister Marinescu, considered that he still deserves all its support, think about it, if you want to create government crises, in Romania you can do it every day," Bolojan said.
He highlighted that the current Government is a coalition one. "As long as you are in a coalition Government, if you want this Government to provide a certain stability, not so that you can stay in office, but to be able to do something in our country, this means that you have to try to take into account the realities that the coalition provides as a result of parliamentary arithmetic and try to do the maximum possible under the given conditions. That's what I tried to do. As long as I find that I can do these things, push things in a good direction for our country, I will do this. In the conditions in which I find that you can no longer do it, as any normal person should do, you should not cling to a position. (...) Mr. Marinescu and any minister can leave a Government, but it remains to be seen what effects this has and whether certain aspects change with this or not," explained Ilie Bolojan.
Ten candidates have registered with the Ministry of Justice for the positions of Prosecutor General of Romania, Chief Prosecutor of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) and Chief Prosecutor of the Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism Offenses (DIICOT), according to the announcement published on the Ministry of Justice website.
