AGERPRES special correspondent to Paris, France, Adrian Tone reports:

Romanian Swimmer David Popovici said on Tuesday, after the men's 100-meter freestyle semifinal, that in Wednesday's final the one who comes closest to being invincible and who will not have stage fright will take the Olympic gold in the most famous event.

"The semifinals were very OK, and the most important thing I had to do, namely to qualify, was achieved. I can't enter tomorrow's final without stage fright. Yesterday I had stage fright, it was a very tense final. We were all extremely agitated and stuck in our heads, I'm sure of that. You can see it on their face, you can see it on my face, I'm sure. We are not invincible, but the one who comes closest to being invincible wins that day," Popovici said.

He added that after the Olympic gold he captured on Monday in the 200m freestyle, he had a hard time falling asleep and that he will try to rest as well as he can before the 100 m final.

"After yesterday evening I had a hard time falling asleep. Anyway, I went to bed late, because I had a lot of things to do, massage, a meal I had late, an anti-doping test, but I rested as best I could. And today I'm going to rest as best I can and tomorrow is the last race of this competition. (...) Anyway, I will give my best and that's why I can't be disappointed if it doesn't turn out as I expected in my head."

Popovici progressed to the 100m freestyle final at the Paris Olympics, fifth in the semifinals on Tuesday evening.

Popovici, who won Olympic gold in the 200-meter freestyle on Monday night, finished the 100m freestyle final in seventh place at the 2021Tokyo Olympics, when she was just 16 years old.

He was the world record holder in the 100 m freestyle (46.86), but China's Zhanle Pan outperformed him (46.80).

The final is scheduled for today.
