AGERPRES special correspondent to Paris, France, Adrian Tone reports:

Romanian swimmer David Popovici says he was pleased to have advanced to the men's 200 m freestyle final top seed in the semifinals on Sunday at the Paris Olympics.

"I am very satisfied, because the only objective I had to accomplish today was to progress to the next stage. I qualified for the final top seed, and that was not easy," said Popovici.

"The public is incredible, I have been to the Olympic Games before, but during the pandemic there was no public, so I am glad to see what the public at the Olympic Games really means, to see how swimming, which in our country is not such a popular sport, fills up this venue, which is actually a stadium. The atmosphere overwhelms me, motivates me and scares me, it excites me, it's very cool," said the Romanian swimmer.

Asked if the next day he will have a medal around his neck, Popovici smiled and said: "I have no idea, we'll see tomorrow."

Popovici on Sunday advanced to the men's 200 m freestyle event at the Paris Olympic Games, top seed, clocking in at 1: 44.53.

Popovici, 19, a two-time world champion and four-time European champion, had previously achieved the best time in the heats, at 1:45.65.

Popovici was fourth in the same event at the Tokyo Olympics.
