Romanian canoe sprinters Ilie Sprincean and Oleg Nuta qualified on Tuesday to the semifinal of the men's C2 500 event of the Paris Olympic Games, after finishing second in the first quarterfinal with a time of 1:40.00, behind the Brazilian duo of Jacky Jamael Nascimento Godmann/Isaquias Guimaraes Queiroz, who raced the distance in 1:38.78.
The fastest three teams in each quarterfinal qualify to the semifinal.
Sprincean and Nuta placed fifth in the first heat, clocking in at 1:40.84, and seventh of the 13 crews that lined up at the start in both heats.
The semifinal and the final are both scheduled for August 8, at 12:20 and 14:20, respectively.
Romania hasn't won an Olympic medal in kayak-canoe since 2000 in Sydney, when Florin Popescu and Mitica Pricop took gold in the men's C2 1000 and bronze in C2 500.
