As many as 110,000 Romanian donors are registered with the National Registry of Voluntary Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors, and since its establishment in 2013, over 560 patients have undergone transplants from unrelated donors, according to Traian Laurian Arghisan, interim general director of the registry.
Arghisan announced on Friday at a news conference, that of the over 560 patients, 29 found donors in Romania and that 35 Romanians donated for patients from abroad, Agerpress.
He said the National Registry of Voluntary Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors is part of a worldwide network of more than 43 million potential donors, which multiplies a patient's chances of finding a compatible donor. He added that identifying a compatible donor remains "difficult", given that the compatibility indices vary from 1 to 200,000 to 500,000 and announced that for 30% of Romanian patients there are no donors, and currently, 47 Romanian patients are waiting for a compatible donor.
He also said that the National Registry of Voluntary Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors and its partners will mark World Marrow Donor Day through a series of events, including a flash mob with the Dinamic band from the Children's Palace, on Saturday.
On Saturday evening the Bucharest City Hall building will light up in red, white and blue, the colours of the International Registry of Stem Cell Donors.
According to the official, on September 23, at Sanofi's headquarters, an awareness campaign on hematopoietic stem cell donation will be organised. At the same time, on September 27, at the National Arena, the donation of hematopoietic stem cells will be promoted, in partnership with the National Authority for Sports.
