AGERPRES special correspondent Oana Ghita reports: President Nicusor Dan reiterated on Tuesday evening that the appointments for the heads of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) and the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) will be made after consultations with the parliamentary parties, so that they can secure Parliament's approval.
"Regarding the heads of the intelligence services, since it is the president who makes the proposal and Parliament must vote, we will hold discussions beforehand to ensure that the appointments are validated by Parliament," the head of state declared at a press conference in Paris.
Nicusor Dan admitted that he already has certain names on his mind for these positions.
Given that, a few months ago, he said that the future SRI and SIE chiefs won't come from political circles, the president was asked in the press conference if anything had changed. "We'll nuance things a bit," the president replied.
Political sources stated on Tuesday that the appointments for the SRI and SIE leadership will be vetted together with the propositions for heads of the major prosecutors' offices.
According to the same sources, there are currently "four to five" variants for the positions of directors of the intelligence services, and political figures are also being considered.
Back in September, President Nicusor Dan told broadcaster Antena 1 that "Romania needs stability. We are not in the situation where we can turn this into a game: I make a proposal, Parliament rejects it, and then we accuse each other. That will definitely not happen."
Asked at that time what kind of people he would like in these positions, Nicusor Dan replied: "People who have life experience, who are capable of coordinating large teams and who have the political ability to navigate many interests, many of them legitimate."
