A third monument dedicated to the anti-communist fight, namely the workers' uprising in 1987, will be erected in the municipality of Brasov, the city's mayor George Scripcaru announced on Wednesday.

According to him, the monumental ensemble will be located in the square opposite the County Hospital, the costs of its construction and location, which are not yet known, will be covered by the local budget.

The announcement was made following a meeting that the Brasov mayor had with representatives of the November 15, 1987 Brasov Association, during which they presented the model of the future monument.

"Unfortunately, in the history textbooks used today in Romanian schools and in the current school curriculum, there are not enough references to the events of November 15, 1987. This is not right, because the younger generations must know and understand these important moments in our history. By creating the memorial ensemble that we propose here, we also assume the role of transmitting this information directly to those who will arrive at this place. Through the texts and informative materials on display, visitors, especially young people, will be able to find out what November 15, 1987 meant for Brasov and for Romania," declared mayor George Scripcaru.

The completion of the works is scheduled for 2027, and the unveiling of the monument would take place on the occasion of marking the 40th anniversary of the Brasov workers' uprising.

"There have been several attempts in the past to build such a monument, but for various reasons, they did not materialize. There was no single clear impediment, but rather a lack of consensus and support at the time. We hope that the monument will be completed by next year, when the 40th anniversary of the events of November 15, 1987, a defining moment for the history of Brasov, will be celebrated. The monument symbolizes the 61 people convicted and deported, but the uprising did not belong to them alone. On that day, there were over 10,000 people on the streets of Brasov. If the December 1989 Revolution represented a turning point for the whole of Romania, Brasov also has an essential historical landmark: November 15, 1987. Through this event, the city holds a unique place in the memory of the fight for freedom," emphasized Marius Boeriu, president of the November 15, 1987 Association.

The sculptor Marius Alexandru Necsoi was also present at the meeting, who presented the concept of the monument.

"The work was created at the initiative of the 'November 15' Association and includes 61 symbolic elements, representing the condemned and deported people. Conceived in a circular shape, the composition suggests the unity and solidarity of those who participated in that historical moment, united for a common purpose. The elements are designed in such a way that, through their vibration and visual dynamics, they create the impression of a single body, expressing the collective strength and connection between people. The work will be made of bronze and placed on a concrete foundation covered with granite. Commemorative texts will be engraved on its surface, and the names of those involved in the event will be inscribed at the base," explained Marius Alexandru Necsoi.

In the coming period, the necessary documentation for the placement of the monument will be developed and the necessary approvals will be obtained, and after obtaining the building permit, the necessary works for the development of the area and the placement of the sculptures that constitute this monumental ensemble will be carried out.

This will be the third monument dedicated to the anti-communist fight of the people of Brasov, after the unveiling in 2024 of the monument dedicated to Liviu Corneliu Babes, who set himself on fire on March 2, 1989 on the Bradul slope in Poiana Brasov to protest against the communist dictatorship, as well as the one dedicated to the December 1989 revolution.
