A lorry carrying 17 tonnes of waste from Germany, mainly used clothing intended for resale as second-hand goods, was stopped by authorities at the Nadlac border area after it was found that the transport was illegal.

According to a press release issued on Tuesday by the Arad Border Police, the lorry was stopped during random checks on roads near the border with Hungary.

'The lorry, driven by a 35-year-old Romanian citizen, was transporting, according to the accompanying documents, mixed clothing waste and other types of waste from a company in Germany to a firm in Romania. Suspecting the legality of the transport, the border police requested authorised support from representatives of the Arad County Commissariat of the National Environmental Guard,' the release reads, Agerpres informs.

Checks revealed that the lorry was actually carrying 16,980 kilograms of waste for which the driver did not present the legally required documentation for import.

The authorities turned the lorry back, which was destined for a company in Hunedoara, and ordered that the waste be returned to the sender.
