AGERPRES special correspondent Florin Stefan reports: There are no guarantees, but there are quite good chances that Romania will take the next step on the path to Schengen accession, namely accession with land borders, as early as this year, the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis said on Wednesday, in New York.

Asked whether he would try to give an impetus in the last months of his mandate to Romania's accession to the Schengen area with land borders, the president replied that "it is extremely important to continue all the steps related to the completion of the Schengen path for Romania" and gave assurances that " worked very intensively all the time for this goal".

"I can't say that there are guarantees, but there are quite good chances that this year we will take the next step. But, until then, we still need a lot of discussions and a lot of negotiations. But we are very committed to this endeavor", said the president of Romania.

Romania and Bulgaria joined the Schengen area with air and sea borders on March 31, 2024, following a decision in Brussels at the end of last year. However, in order to achieve the second step of the full accession of the two states to Schengen, a new political decision within the Council of Justice and Internal Affairs is necessary.

Magnus Brunner, the nomination of Austria, the only state that opposed Romania's full accession to Schengen, will most likely be the new European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, according to the composition of the new European Commission announced on September 17 by President Ursula von der Leyen. His candidacy still needs to be validated by the European Parliament, which will then vote on the entire von der Leyen Commission 2.
