Iasi City Hall announced on Monday that it is securing nearly 78 million euro in European funding to modernise the tram lines in Copou, create a 'ring' around the Palace of Culture and purchase ten new trams.

According to a press release, Mayor Mihai Chirica signed the European funding contract at the end of last week through the North-East Regional Programme 2021-2027, Priority 4 - A region with more sustainable urban mobility. The project covers the rehabilitation of the infrastructure and superstructure of the tram tracks on the section between the Central University Library 'Mihai Eminescu' and the Triumf stop, including the roundabout.

The project relating to Carol I Boulevard is valued at approximately 17 million euros.

'The works will consist of rehabilitating the double-track section over a length of 1,416 metres and 120 metres of single track at the Triumf roundabout, modernising pavements over an area of 6,079 square metres and green spaces covering 2,589 square metres. Interventions will include infrastructure, superstructure, replacement of overhead line support poles, the contact line network, modernisation of tram traffic safety elements (vertical and horizontal signage, upgrading pedestrian crossings, creating facilities for people with disabilities) and the modernisation of the stops at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University and the Triumf roundabout,' the source said.

The decision approving the technical and economic indicators and the overall estimate, as well as submitting the project for funding, was approved at the Local Council meeting on 29 August 2025. Representatives of Iasi City Hall submitted the project for funding to the North-East Regional Development Agency via the MySMIS electronic platform on 24 September 2025.

According to the press release, two other major urban mobility and public transport projects were submitted last autumn for funding under the North-East Regional Programme 2021-2027. The North-East Regional Development Agency will communicate the evaluation results of these projects in the coming period.

Additionally, at the legislative meeting on 19 September 2025, a project approving the technical and economic indicators and feasibility study, as well as the submission for funding of a project to purchase ten new 22-metre trams valued at an estimated 31.8 million euros, was also approved.

The total value of all four European projects funded under Priority 4 is approximately 77.8 million euros.
