The government approved on Wednesday a protocol based on which expert groups will be created to examine issues of joint Romanian-Ukrainian interest in the border sector of the Tisa, Prut, Siret and Danube rivers.

The Protocol of the 12th Session of the Plenipotentiaries, agreed upon on April 24, 2024, was approved by government decision for the enforcement of the Agreement between the Government of Romania and the Government of Ukraine on cooperation in the field of border water management, signed in Galati on September 30, 1997.

"Also, the Protocol approves sand and gravel quarrying volumes from the Tisa, Prut and Siret riverbeds, and a new work program for 2024 for the application of this Protocol. In the event of an unsafe situation in the border area, Romania and Ukraine can each verify water engineering works on their territory. These decisions adopted at the 12th session contribute to the protection of water quality at the border, to enhancing flood protection measures, to the sustainable management of border waters, benefiting the environment and local communities," the government said in a release.

The next Session of the Plenipotentiaries will take place in October in Romania, the cited source mentioned.
