Romania's Foreign Minister Oana Toiu on Thursday said that the decision to ban entry into Romania of Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban took into account the fact that for a long time "complicated ties" of him with representatives of the Russian Federation have been long documented.

She told the RFI broadcaster that the decision by which Ceban and two other nationals of Moldova were banned from entering the territory of Romania was taken for reasons related to national security, agerpres reports.

"In the case of Mr Ceban, because he is the only public name I can talk about, there have been long documented complicated links between him and representatives of the Russian Federation. To Romania it is extremely important that this type of influence be limited on our soil, especially since we have a very large number of citizens, who are both Romanian citizens and citizens of Moldova. It is a decision that was taken for reasons related to national security. The decision not to allow access to Romania has the direct effect of the decision not to allow access to the territory of the Schengen Area," said Toiu.

She added that the measure was not directly established by the Foreign Ministry, because such a decision or monitoring does not fall within the competence of the ministry.

"It is not a measure that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken directly, because such monitoring and this type of decision on national security does not fall within our competence. It is a decision that is based on these reasons of national security, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is an important partner in this process and to us it is very important, as far as it is up to us and the other ministries, to make sure we contain this type of risks of influence and presence on our soil," said Toiu explained.

As for the parliamentary election that will take place in Moldova in September, Toiu said that it is important to reflect the will expressed in the referendum on EU accession in the election results.

"To us it is very important that the will of the citizens of Moldova expressed through the referendum, namely that of joining the European Union, is a will that is reflected in the upcoming elections. It is very important that they are organised correctly and, in particular, that they are guarded elections, protected from the interference of other states. and, here, Romania has gone through some experiences recently. We believe that we can be of assistance inside the European Union, and in the bilateral relationship with Moldova, to share part of the lessons we have learned, part of the tactics we have seen used in these campaigns," she said.
