The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile (IICCMER)calls for firm measures to combat the "online assault" of disinformation campaigns and communism nostalgia, inform Agerpres.
"IICCMER is once again drawing attention to the online assault of communism nostalgia campaigns and disinformation, while highlighting the need for firm measures to combat this dangerous phenomenon for democracy and national security. At the same time, the institute is voicing its solidarity with the Attorney General of Romania, Alex Florenta, and considers the report presented today a crucial step taken in the fight against the hybrid war coordinated by the Russian Federation and which has been visibly manifested in the public space in recent years," IICCMER said in a press statement.
IICCMER recalls that the Attorney General's Office has identified four major types of narratives used since 2022 to manipulate public opinion at key moments, with the first and most important pattern being the identity-nostalgic narrative.
Over time, IICCMER has drawn attention to the existence of coordinated propaganda campaigns of ideologies specific to totalitarian regimes, including this year, when it sent to the National Audiovisual Council (CNA) a request to dismantle a network that included tens of thousands of trolls and bots, who posted false and nostalgic-totalitarian content on social media, contributing to the spread of an erroneous image about Romania's recent history.
