Primary energy and electricity resources increased, in the first five months of this year, by 5.7% and 3.4%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2024, and final electricity consumption advanced 1.3%, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Tuesday.
Thus, the main primary energy resources, between January 1 and May 31, 2025, totaled 13.519 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), an increase of 726,900 toe compared to the same period last year, agerpres reports.
Domestic production amounted to 6.906 million toe, down 342,000 toe (-4.7%) compared to the period January 1 - May 31, 2024, and imports stood at 6.612 million toe, up 1.068 million toe (+19.3%).
During this period, electricity resources totaled 28.809 billion kWh, up 945.9 million kWh compared to the period from January 1 to May 31, 2024.
Production from thermal power plants totaled 6.994 billion kWh, down 6.3 million kWh (-0.1%), while production from hydroelectric power plants stood at 5.177 billion kWh, down 2.068 billion kWh (-28.5%), and that from nuclear power plants reached 4.602 billion kWh, down 74.4 million kWh (-1.6%).
At the same time, production from wind power plants, in the first five months of 2025, was 2.616 billion kWh, down by 446.7 million kWh compared to the same period of the previous year, and solar energy produced in photovoltaic installations exceeded 1.619 billion kWh, up by 394.4 million kWh, year-on-year.
According to the INS data, from January to the end of May 2025, final electricity consumption totaled 20.912 billion kWh, 1.3% higher than the period from January 1 to May 31, 2024, while final electricity consumption in the economy remained at the same level.
Regarding the population's consumption of electricity, it increased in the reference period by 5.7%, while public lighting recorded a decrease of 8.4%.
INS data show that electricity exports reached 5.723 billion kWh, up 771.9 million kWh compared to the same period in 2024.
Also, own technological consumption in networks and stations was 2.173 billion kWh, down 85.5 million kWh, compared to the reference interval.
