The Administration of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (ARBDD) has sent local authorities a series of measures to be taken to limit the damage caused by the golden jackals and has started the procedures for authorizing new actions for the extraction of these wild mammals, given that in recent years the population has complained of numerous damages caused by the species.
According to an ARBDD address published on the website of the Tulcea City Hall, animal breeders must guard their herds with dogs, fence their farms and equip them with light devices, guard the females when they are about to give birth and notify the authorities immediately after they register damage to their farms, Agerpres.
ARBDD also urges local authorities to build animal shelters to protect the animals during the night or when the attacks of the golden jackals multiply, to control the management of animal waste, but also of stray dogs, in conditions where "many potential attacks attributed to golden jackals have been carried out by dogs".
"We are in the process of reissuing the authorization for the extraction of the golden jackals from the Reserve, so that the remaining 170 or so specimens of animals can be extracted by the County Hunters' Association, according to the opinion received from the Romanian Academy," the governor of the Reserve, Bogdan Bulete, told AGERPRES.
The extraction of the species from the Reserve is conducted under the supervision of ARBDD representatives, as hunting in the Delta is forbidden.
The golden jackals are wild mammals that have been present in Romania for almost 50 years, they feed on small animals and carcasses and play an important ecological and sanitary role in the Danube Delta ecosystems, according to the ARBDD address published on the Tulcea City Hall website.
