Defence minister Ionut Mosteanu on Monday evening hailed the decision of US president Donald Trump to continue supporting Ukraine with modern weapons, including Patriot systems.

"I hail and support president Donald Trump's decision to continue supporting Ukraine with modern weapons, including Patriot systems. Ukraine is also fighting for Romania's borders, for the security of Europe. The attack in Chernivtsi - in the city where thousands of ethnic Romanians live - was yet another proof that Russia is not seeking peace, but terror. The announcement made by president Trump and NATO secretary general Mark Rutte, regarding the sending of Patriot missiles and other weapons to Ukraine, with the financial support of NATO states, is a strong signal to the Kremlin. And if Putin does not stop the aggression, tough economic sanctions will follow. We support this direction. Only a free Ukraine guarantees a safe Romania, agerpres reports.

Romania, through the Bolojan Government, will increase its defence budget and continues to reform and modernise its army," the defence minister wrote on his X page.

During a meeting with NATO secretary general Mark Rutte, US President Donald Trump stated on Monday that Washington and the European Union have reached a agreement on the supply of weapons to Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the leader at the White House for his readiness to protect the lives of Ukrainians, Reuters reported.

"I am grateful to President Trump for his readiness to support the protection of the lives of our people," Zelensky said in his video speech, after the US president announced that he was sending weapons to Kiev and giving Moscow 50 days to reach a ceasefire, otherwise threatening Russia with sanctions.
