The legacy left by the survivors of the Holocaust needs to be passed down to each generation, Prime Minister Viorica Dancila said, at the wreath-laying ceremony at the Holocaust Memorial Monument.
"The importance and symbolism of those that stood erect between the peoples and during history's darkest moments forgot about themselves in order to lend a helping hand. (...) Over seven decades since this tragic moment of our mutual history, there are few survivors among us who can bear witness to the past. The testimonies of the Holocaust survivors have an extremely important role in the fight against intolerance, discrimination and exclusion of any kind. The legacy left to us by the survivors of the Holocaust needs to be passed on to each generation," the Prime Minister said.
"My participation, alongside distinguished gusts, in a solemn event as the one today, confirms the size of the moral obligation which lies with all of us to make all efforts in order to counter any sort of anti-Semitic, xenophobic manifestation and to prevent such tragedies from ever taking place," Viorica Dancila showed.
In Romania, by Government Decision no. 672/5 May 2004, the date of 9 October (marking the beginning of the Jews' deportation to Transnistria, in 1941) was approved as the official national commemoration of the Holocaust Remembrance Day.
