European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath will pay a high-level visit to Bucharest on Thursday, focusing on strengthening democracy and the rule of law, the European Commission's Representation announced.
The visit coincides with an ongoing technical mission to Romania on the rule of law, carried out by the Commission's Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers (DG JUST) as part of preparations for the annual Rule of Law Report covering all EU member states.
Commissioner McGrath is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, Justice Minister Radu Marinescu, Foreign Minister Oana Toiu and Romanian lawmakers. He will also hold discussions with the leadership of the judiciary and prosecutors' offices, as well as with magistrates, their associations and civil society organisations.
The visit aims to deepen dialogue with Romanian authorities and stakeholders, key partners in consolidating democracy and the rule of law, and reaffirms that the rule of law remains the core foundation of the European Union.
