Insurance payouts under voluntary CASCO insurance policies exceeded RON 2.56 billion in 2025, up 8% year-on-year, according to the National Union of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies of Romania.

The organisation said that, on average, around RON 7 million was paid out daily to cover damage to CASCO-insured vehicles. The number of claims remained high, exceeding 276,000 in 2025. In practical terms, a driver in Romania receives compensation under a CASCO policy for damage to their own vehicle every two minutes, on average, amid a persistently high frequency of incidents.

"These policies are becoming increasingly relevant. For a growing number of drivers, CASCO is no longer an option but a necessity, and rising vehicle values and repair costs make the protection offered by CASCO essential in managing everyday risks," said Alexandru Ciuncan, president and director general of UNSAR.

CASCO insurance provides coverage for a wide range of risks, including damage, theft and natural hazards, contributing to drivers' financial stability and helping maintain their mobility.

"With hundreds of claims handled daily, it is clear that risks are part of every driver's routine. CASCO insurance offers financial security and helps reduce the stress associated with unforeseen events," added Alina Barbulescu, coordinator of general insurance sections within UNSAR.

Founded in 1994, UNSAR represents 22 insurance companies accounting for over 90% of the local insurance market. Since 2007, it has been a full member of Insurance Europe.
