The National Airports Company of Bucharest (CNAB) has started implementing a strategic project to produce electricity from renewable sources for the own consumption of the Henri Coandă International Airport of Bucharest, which consists of building a photovoltaic plant with a total planned capacity of 31.5 MWp, integrated with a 30 MWh energy storage system.
According to a CNAB press release, the project has an estimated total value of 283.765 million lei (excluding VAT) and is designed in stages, in correlation with the current energy needs and future developments of the airport infrastructure. The first stage provides for the construction of a photovoltaic plant with an installed capacity of 12.6 MWp and an energy storage system of 17.88 MWh, connected to the airport's 20 kV power plant.
For this stage, the National Company of Bucharest Airports submitted the project for financing under the program "Supporting investments in new capacities for the production of electricity from renewable sources for the self-consumption of aerodromes, including energy storage systems", financed from the Modernization Fund and managed by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. The financing contract has already been signed, Agerpres informs.
The total value of the first stage is 176.878 million RON (excluding VAT), of which 132 million RON (excluding VAT) represents eligible non-reimbursable financing, the difference being provided from CNAB's own funds, related to ineligible expenses and VAT.
"This project represents an essential step in the extensive modernization process of the Henri Coanda International Airport Bucharest. Investments in the production of energy from renewable sources directly contribute to increasing the airport's energy autonomy, reducing operational costs and reducing the impact on the environment, in full accordance with European standards and the sustainability objectives assumed by the company," stated Bogdan Mîndrescu, general director of the National Company Bucharest Airports, quoted in the press release.
The implementation of Stage 1 constitutes the first concrete step in a strategic project that will ensure, in the medium and long term, both the reduction of carbon emissions and the maintenance of safety and operational continuity for the national critical infrastructure of Henri Coanda Airport, the document also states.
Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport recently achieved Level 3 accreditation under the Airport Carbon Accreditation program, run by ACI Europe. According to the accreditation certificate, this distinction confirms the airport's exemplary work in managing and reducing CO2 emissions, as well as the involvement of other entities in this endeavor, as a response of the global airport industry to the challenges of climate change.
