The highest average price for a hectare of arable land in Romania last year was recorded in the Bucharest-Ilfov region at 62,477 lei per hectare, while the lowest was in the North-East region at 37,693 lei per hectare, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Tuesday.
Using the methodology agreed at European level, the national average price of arable land in Romania in 2024 was 43,280 lei per hectare, representing an increase of approximately 4% compared with 2023. The most significant rise in average arable land prices was observed in the South-West Oltenia region, up 8.3%.
The average price of permanent pastures, at 31,124 lei per hectare, increased by around 3.6% in 2024 compared with the previous year, with the largest increases in the South-East and South-Muntenia regions, both up 7.3%.
Across the European Union, last year the average price of a hectare of arable land showed considerable variation. According to data for 22 EU member states in 2024 quoted by the INS, arable land prices ranged from a minimum of 4,825 euros per hectare in Latvia to a maximum of 201,263 euros per hectare in Malta, while in Romania the average price was 8,700 euros per hectare, Agerpres informs.
The average price of permanent pastures in EU member states in 2024 ranged from 1,877 euros per hectare in Bulgaria to 77,609 euros per hectare in the Netherlands, while in Romania the average price was 6,257 euros per hectare.
Each year the National Institute of Statistics carries out the Agricultural Land Prices survey as part of the Annual National Statistical Programme, aiming to collect data on the sale prices of agricultural land. Eurostat requests these data annually by land use category, primarily for comparisons between EU member states and their regions in terms of price levels and trends in buying and selling.
Agricultural land represents the main means of production in agriculture and has distinct characteristics determined by factors such as soil, water, biodiversity and climate. These characteristics give the land its specific value and price, the INS says.
Arable land refers to land that is regularly worked, either ploughed or cultivated, generally within a crop rotation system.
