Almost 400 karatekas from Georgia, Moldova, Turkey, Ukraine and Romania will participate, at the weekend, in the Tulcea County town of Babadag in the international Kyokushin karate competition, Danube Delta Cup.

The event, now in its tenth edition, is organised by the Nippon Budo Sport sports club, with financial support from the Tulcea County Council (CJ).

"As many as 388 karatekas have registered for the competition, but changes may occur. They are from 26 clubs from five countries - Romania, Moldova, Turkey, Georgia and Ukraine - but so far, the athletes from Turkey have not managed to get a visa. The competition will take place on two events, kata and kumite," chairman of the sports club Nicolae Panuta told a news conference on Thursday.

He added that he hoped next year the competition will take place in the multifunctional sports hall of Tulcea, and Stefan Coman, a representative of the County Council attending the event, said that the hall will open next year.

"It will be a great satisfaction for this contest to return to Tulcea. We hope that other sports competitions will come to Tulcea as well, because a state-of-the-art gym also means the development of tourism. The works are expected to be completed by the end of this year, and we hope that in the spring of next year we will make the inauguration," said the representative of the County Council.

The County Council is contributing RON45,000 towards funding the event that will take place on Saturday, June 15, with the Babadag City Hall to add RON 15,000, as total costs are expected to near RON 75,000.
