President of the Alliance for Romanians' Union (AUR) George Simion was presented in the US with an award from the Republicans for National Renewal, at the Trump Kennedy Art Center, for his "work in defending freedom of expression and democracy in Europe."
According to an AUR release sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday, the distinction was awarded for "the role of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party (ECR) as 'the most pro-transatlantic European party' and for the involvement of George Simion, ECR Party executive vice-president, in combating censorship and anti-democratic excesses.", agerpres reports.
"Dear friends, I have been involved, together with the Romanian people, in a great battle for freedom, for free and fair elections, and for democracy. This award is for the Romanians who stood up to defend their right to live in a democracy, just like the United States of America. In the face of all annulled and invalidated elections, we will rise to fight for our rights. I speak here and receive this award also as vice-president of the European Conservatives and Reformists. We are the most pro-transatlantic political party in Europe, together with Giorgia Meloni, Mateusz Morawiecki, Carlo Fidanza and Marion Marechal," Simion said at the ceremony.
He underscored that the US represents an example of "democracy."
"Many things have changed in just one year. Many more will change in the next three years. We look to the United States with hope. We look to the United States as an example of democracy. We rise to defend freedom of expression and free and fair elections," Simion added after receiving the award.
Congressmen Abe Hamadeh, Andy Ogles and Anna Luna were also awarded at the ceremony.
The AUR delegation will provide US congressmen with a report regarding the annulment of presidential elections in Romania, a document presenting arguments regarding the violation of democratic and constitutional principles, the release informed.
Moreover, the AUR delegation has scheduled political meetings in Washington, including institutional-level discussions, as part of the demarche to inform Romania's strategic partners.
