Over 4 million mobile internet connections used 5G networks by mid-2025, representing one in five active connections and generating approximately 7% of total mobile internet traffic, according to a report on the telecom market for the first half of this year, published by the National Authority for Administration and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM).
"In the first half of this year, the number of fixed internet connections allowing Gigabit speeds exceeded 2.5 million, and the average monthly consumption of internet traffic reached 111 GB per inhabitant, of which 97 GB on fixed networks and 14 GB on mobile networks," claim the study's authors.
Regarding fixed internet, the report shows that 6.9 million connections were recorded at the middle of the year, 1% ahead of the end of 2024, of which 37% are Gigabit.
"The growth comes mainly from individual subscribers in rural areas, and the average monthly traffic reached 97 GB per inhabitant, up 8%. The top 3 providers by number of connections are: Digi 73%, Orange 15% and Vodafone 10%," the document also states.
Regarding mobile internet, 21.8 million connections were active at mid-year, of which 18.7 million used 4G and/or 5G. "4G networks continue to support mobile internet traffic, representing 92% of the total. Average monthly traffic was 14 GB per inhabitant, up 6%, representing approximately 460 MB daily. By the number of active connections, Orange had a market share of 35%, Digi 32% and Vodafone 21%," the analysis also shows.
Regarding mobile telephony, the number of SIM cards returned to 23 million, up 1%, based on subscriptions (+3%), to the detriment of active prepaid cards (-5%). "Voice traffic decreased to 27.8 billion minutes (-3%), that is, on average, a little over 4 hours per month per inhabitant. Based on the number of active cards, Orange remains the leader (34%), followed by Digi (30%) and Vodafone (24%)", the cited source shows.
Regarding television, the number of subscribers to TV retransmission services remains at over 7.8 million. At the same time, the cable segment continues to attract users, with a 2% increase, up to 7.1 million, while satellite services continue to lose ground (-11%). By total number of subscribers, Digi holds 76% of the market, followed by Orange with 13% and Vodafone with 9%.
Total revenues in the telecom sector registered a slight decrease (-1%) in the first half of 2025, reaching a value of 7.9 billion lei (almost 1.6 billion euros), the evolution being determined mainly by the decrease in mobile telephony revenues. Thus, Orange has 33% of revenues, Digi 31%, and Vodafone 23%.
The statistical data report on the electronic communications market in Romania for the first semester of 2025 is prepared by ANCOM based on statistical data reported by providers who are obliged to transmit to ANCOM the values of the indicators corresponding to the service categories according to Decision 333/2013.
