Almost half of Romanians expect to spend much less or less over the winter holidays compared with last year, while 18% say they will spend more or much more, according to a survey conducted by the Avangarde Group for Socio-Behavioural Studies.
Some 25% said they will spend much less (22% in urban areas and 31% in rural areas), 24% less (20% urban, 31% rural), 27% the same (26% urban, 27% rural), 16% more (24% urban, 7% rural), and 2% much more (4% urban, 2% rural).
Focusing on Christmas alone, 22% of respondents said they will spend more (40% urban, 27% rural), 23% the same (21% urban, 22% rural), and 46% less (30% urban, 47% rural).
For 43% of survey participants, income in 2025 was lower compared with 2024 (47% urban, 33% rural), for 33% it remained the same (21% urban, 29% rural), and 30% reported higher income (30% urban, 37% rural).
Asked where they usually spend New Year's Eve, 56% said at home (56% urban, 61% rural), 7% with parents/grandparents/family (6% urban, 10% rural), 15% at friends' homes (16% urban, 11% rural), 14% at hotels/guesthouses/etc. in another locality (14% urban, 13% rural), and 4% at hotels/restaurants/bars/clubs in their own locality (5% urban, 3% rural), Agerpres informs.
Responses for where they plan to celebrate New Year's Eve this year are similar: 59% at home (55% urban, 60% rural), 8% with parents/grandparents/family (6% urban, 9% rural), 13% at friends' homes (15% urban, 12% rural), 11% at hotels/guesthouses/etc. in another locality (13% urban, 9% rural), and 6% at hotels/restaurants/bars/clubs in their own locality (8% urban, 3% rural).
Regarding Christmas, most respondents (82%) said they will spend it at home (80% urban, 82% rural), 8% with friends/family (8% both urban and rural), 7% travelling to another locality (8% urban, 5% rural), and 2% abroad (3% urban, 1% rural).
When asked if they consider their family's financial situation better, the same, or worse than exactly the same period last year, 27% said much worse (33% urban, 11% rural), 28% worse (21% urban, 37% rural), 36% the same (32% urban, 32% rural), 7% better (9% urban, 5% rural), and 1% much better (all urban).
Looking ahead to 2026, 31% expect their family will be much worse off (37% urban, 14% rural), 28% worse (21% urban, 41% rural), 27% the same (25% urban, 33% rural), 10% better (12% urban, 7% rural), and 1% much better (2% urban, 1% rural).
The survey on winter holidays - behaviour and expectations was conducted by telephone between 18-22 December 2025 on a sample of 900 subjects. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.3%, at a 95% confidence level.
