The president of the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP), Adrian Tutuianu, had a working meeting on Tuesday with Oana Darie, Director General of the Consular Department, and Cristian Teodorescu-Rusoiu, Director of the Consular Training and Communication Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), on the topic of updating and correcting the Electoral Registry, especially regarding the situation of Romanian citizens in the diaspora.

According to a press release from the AEP, the discussions aimed at optimizing the exchange of information between the institutions involved, especially for the registration of deaths.

MAE officials reported that in 2025, 1,193 deaths of Romanians residing abroad were reported, the cited source informs.

They explained that the transcription of death certificates issued abroad at Romanian consulates is essential for the official recognition of death in Romania and to allow the updating of the Electoral Registry, the removal of deceased persons and the avoidance of errors in electoral records.

"The electoral registery must permanently reflect reality, and this is possible only through constant cooperation between state institutions, both inside and outside the country. For Romanian citizens in the diaspora, collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is essential, so that electoral data is correct and updated, in accordance with the law, based on official information or documents submitted by the entitled persons. At the same time, it is important that Romanians in the diaspora also understand and respect the necessary steps for registering these documents, so that electoral records remain complete and correct," said the president of the AEP, Adrian Tutuianu, according to the press release.

The meeting with the MAE representatives took place in continuation of the AEP's steps for the rigorous updating of the Electoral Register. In this regard, on February 5, the president of the AEP had a working meeting with representatives of the General Directorate for Personal Records.
