Save Romania Union (USR) Senator Stefan Palarie said on Monday that Romania's participation as an observer in the Washington Peace Council is "a good thing", as it allows for "certain clarifications" to be made.

Palarie recalled that the council was created "on the basis of a United Nations resolution mandating the development of an instrument to address military and security issues in the Gaza Strip".

"Based on this resolution, the Peace Council emerged, which President Donald Trump proposed recently in Davos. Under this mandate of the Peace Council, Romania asked several clarifying questions: to what extent it keeps within the framework of the UN resolution, of which Romania is a signatory and party, and to what extent new elements are being introduced. As long as these elements are clarified, we can move forward with an assumed position. That is what we are doing now," Palarie said at the Parliament House.

He underscored that observer status does not involve "any financial obligation".

"This assumed position is to participate as an observer in Washington in this meeting, which sees the confirmed participation of states such as Hungary and Bulgaria, which even signed the agreement in Davos. (...) Romania currently has observer status, so it will not pay any money for this participation. Italy has also confirmed its participation as an observer, and Cyprus as well. I understand that we also have the public confirmation of a European Commissioner's participation. This means that we are aligned with European partners in taking part as observers. I believe this participation is a good thing. Again, it does not generate any financial obligation, and I think we will obtain further clarifications," Palarie added.

President Nicusor Dan announced on Sunday that he will take part this week in the first meeting of the Peace Council in Washington, responding to the invitation extended by U.S. President Donald Trump.
