Romania's final electricity consumption decreased last year by 0.9% compared to 2024, while household consumption fell by 1%, according to data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
According to the cited source, between 1 January and 31 December 2025, primary energy resources increased by 3.7%, while electricity resources rose by 5.1% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Total primary energy resources amounted to 33.934 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), up by 1.222 million toe year-on-year.
Domestic production totalled 16.526 million toe, down by 389,700 toe (-2.3%), while imports reached 17.407 million toe, up by 1.612 million toe (+10.2%).
During the analysed period, electricity resources stood at 69.645 billion kWh, an increase of 3.396 billion kWh compared to the reference period.
INS data show that electricity production from thermal power plants totalled 17.372 billion kWh, down by 83.1 million kWh (-0.5%), while hydropower production amounted to 12.404 billion kWh, decreasing by 1.908 billion kWh (-13.3%). Electricity generated by nuclear power plants reached 11.012 billion kWh, up by 100.4 million kWh (+0.9%) compared to 2024.
At the same time, wind power generation totalled 6.045 billion kWh, down by 312.7 million kWh, while solar energy produced by photovoltaic installations amounted to 4.552 billion kWh, an increase of 1.144 billion kWh.
Nationwide, in the first 12 months of 2025, final electricity consumption totalled 50.048 billion kWh, 0.9% lower than in the same period of 2024. Final electricity consumption in the economy declined by 0.9%, public lighting fell by 3.3%, while household consumption dropped by 1%.
Electricity exports amounted to 14.513 billion kWh, up by 3.670 billion kWh, while own technological consumption in networks and substations totalled 5.083 billion kWh, 186.5 million kWh higher compared to 2024.
