Combatting cross-border organised crime of all kind was among the subjects of discussion between senior official with Romania's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) Bogdan Despescu, and Federal Prosecutor John Hanley, coordinator of the Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT) for Romania and Bulgaria, within the US Department of Justice (DOJ) in Sofia, Bulgaria.

"The focus will be on border security, combatting illegal migration and cybercrime, both of maximum interest to the authorities in Washington and Bucharest. The objective of strengthening cooperation with the American side was reiterated, through the exchange of good practices and information, in order to counter security challenges,"MAI reported on Wednesday.

During the conversation, the high level of cooperation carried out by MAI with the American authorities was highlighted, as well as the commitment to continuing and strengthening it, both at the strategic and technical levels, through contacts and direct dialogue.

The training component of the MAI staff was another point of interest of the discussions, highlighting the willingness of the American side to provide support by carrying out training activities in the jurisdiction of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, including following the model of the FBI Academy at Quantico.

The two interlocutors expressed their willingness to keep in regular contact in order to identify the best ways of solving issues that arise within operative cooperation.

The meeting was part of the measures agreed during a February 2026 visit to the U.S. of Romania's Minister of the Interior Catalin Predoiu.
