President Nicusor Dan said on Monday that he will act to defend judicial independence and that he shares the concerns regarding this matter.

"I am heading to the Helsinki Summit, but I carry with me the society's concerns about the functioning of justice, which I share. The issues raised in the public space are serious, but they can be resolved. Within the limits of my constitutional duties, I will act to defend judicial independence and the rule of law. The rule of law is non-negotiable," the head of state wrote on X.

He argues that for Romania to be a state which is respected internationally, it must first have credible, functional and fair institutions internally.

"These two objectives are not mutually exclusive, they support each other. The security of the state starts from within," Nicusor Dan added.

The President has invited the magistrates to the Cotroceni Palace on December 22 for an open-ended discussion regarding the issues facing the judicial system.

On Monday and Tuesday, Nicusor Dan is in Finland to attend the EU Eastern Flank Summit.
