The Politehnica University of Science and Technology of Bucharest on Wednesday released a project co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund providing for the construction of a building that will have dozens of classrooms and laboratories, on an investment of almost RON 50 million.

Politehnica Rector Mihnea Costoiu says this is a major project.

"The new building is a beautiful mix. In 2019 we officially started the first stage when we signed the financing contract with the European Investment Bank, at that time being the first project financed by the EIB in a university in Europe. The pandemic came, we saw each other less, including with builders and designers, at least for a while. (...) In this construction there is a very important funding mix: on the one hand, the loan from the EIB, the money that comes in a grant through the Regional Development Agency - through the Regional Operational Programme, and the university's resources," Costoiu said.

The project aims to build a new four-storey building, including a ground floor and basement, of a total area of 34,500 sqm, intended for the Faculty of Applied Chemistry and Materials Science, the Faculty of Medical Engineering, the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering and the Faculties of Entrepreneurship, Engineering and Business Management, on a total investment standing at RON 49.8 million, including RON 39.8 million worth of European Regional Development Fund money.

"It is a project designed to create a new infrastructure with laboratories for the four faculties, with specific laboratories for the Faculty of Chemistry and the Faculty of Medical Engineering, but also for the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering where we have some more atypical laboratories, and at the moment the activity is carried out at partners in the aeronautical industry", according to Politehnica Director General Mihai Corocaiescu.

According to him, the building will have a banquet hall of 200 seats, as well as a cafeteria of 350 - 400 seats.

The new infrastructure will include 40 classrooms, 10 amphitheatres and 106 laboratories, and works will also be carried out to make spaces accessible for people with disabilities.

The implementation period of the project is August 29, 2025 - December 31, 2029.
