A mountain rescue team from the Maramures County Mountain Rescue Service saved a 31-year old Ukrainian who crossed the border to Romania through the Maramures Mountains, this service's head, Dan Benga, informed on Monday evening.
The rescue mission started on Sunday night later being interrupted because of the heavy snowfall and low visibility. It was resumed on Monday by a mixed team of mountain rescuers and border police.
The Maramures County Mountain Rescue Service representative specified that the young man was found and that the rescue teams stayed with him in the mountains overnight, following all to descend on Tuesday morning.
"The first response team of Maramures Salvamont managed to save the 31-year old Ukrainian. He is still alive! They all found shelter in a sheepfold, they made a fire and they will stay there overnight, as temperatures are extremely low, below 20 degrees Celsius, and the snow layer is more than one metre thick, which makes the descent very difficult. But tomorrow morning we are trying to bring them back by helicopter, if the weather allows us. And then our colleagues will come down too," said Dan Benga.
The young Ukrainian called 112 and he was located in an area in the Maramuresului Mountains which is less used by the refugees from Ukraine.
