The Local Council of Hunedoara municipality unanimously decided on Wednesday to declare April 10, 2026 as a "day of local mourning" in memory of former football coach Mircea Lucescu.
According to a decision adopted in an extraordinary meeting of the Local Council of Hunedoara, the Romanian flag will be flown at half-mast at the headquarters of public institutions and authorities in the city, and sports and cultural institutions will adapt their programs accordingly.
"For Hunedoara, Mircea Lucescu was the light that gave hope to a city in the gray times of a regime in which joys were few. He came to Hunedoara and built not only a football team, but a place of memory: Corvinul Hunedoara. Mr. Lucescu showed the children of Hunedoara, through his personal example, but also through the footballers he raised, that they can become everything they want, through work, education and, above all, word. Subsequently, his support for Hunedoara was unceasing and unconditional. Although he was not born in Hunedoara, Mr. Mircea Lucescu is one of ours. In fact, he was, is and will always remain one of the most beloved people from Hunedoara", the mayor of Hunedoara, Dan Boboutanu declared on this occasion.
Mircea Lucescu finished his career as a football player at Corvinul Hunedoara, a club he joined in 1977. It was here that he also began his career as a coach.
His relationship with Hunedoara did not end when his term as coach of the Corvinul team ended, as Mircea Lucescu promoted and supported the local sports movement permanently, including in his last years of life.
For his outstanding merits, Mircea Lucescu was declared "Honorary Citizen of Hunedoara" in 2013.
