Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor said on Monday on Digi 24 that the vote on the simple motion against the Minister of the Environment, Diana Buzoianu, may create the impression of a 'dysfunctional coalition,' but in reality it is not a blockage, rather the need to harmonise political decisions within it.
According to the UDMR leader, the protocol concluded between the governing parties stipulates that no member of the coalition signs or votes for simple motions or motions of no confidence against a colleague in the Government, and the position of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), which breached the agreement, will be discussed within the coalition.
'On Wednesday we will have a coalition meeting and I am convinced we will discuss this matter. I do not want to speculate now about what will happen or how it will happen, but this case shows what has been seen in recent times, that beyond political, technical and specialist disputes, because here, indeed, that disaster in Prahova did occur, beyond all these aspects there is also the political issue and we must first discuss it within the coalition. It is serious in any situation when, in a political coalition, things happen that should not happen, including a vote on a simple motion, which is not the end of the world. The problem is that, at this moment, our coalition appears to be a dysfunctional coalition. Some time ago I put it more harshly, saying that it is a politically impotent coalition, because certain decisions we have been unable to take for three months, three and a half months, four months, which is not good. It is not blocked, because the Government is functioning, the Government is doing what it has to do, but certain political decisions must be made within the coalition,' explained the UDMR leader.
Regarding the motion against the Minister of the Environment, Diana Buzoianu, Kelemen Hunor said he does not believe it will lead to her removal from office, but considers that she also bears significant responsibility for the situation recently created in Prahova County.
'I do not believe at this moment that it will come to the replacement of Mrs Buzoianu. However, there is the issue of responsibility. When you are a minister, you may not be directly responsible, but there is political responsibility for any head of an institution. And here, of course, from the top of Romanian Waters company to the minister, there is responsibility. You cannot run away from this responsibility if you wanted to be a minister. When what happened in Praid occurred, I said exactly the same thing about Salrom and Romanian Waters. So, all right, maybe there is no direct responsibility, but there is a responsibility whereby such an incident cannot remain without consequences, because that would mean that Romania continues to be a country without consequences. I am not falling into the trap of saying that Diana Buzoianu should step down, but we cannot deny that responsibility and accountability must be assumed in this situation as well,' Kelemen Hunor added.
