Protecting the shared border remains a priority objective for the Romanian and Hungarian interior ministries, Interior Minister Catalin Predoiu said on Tuesday during a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart, Sandor Pinter, while visiting Hungary to attend the ministerial meeting of the Salzburg Forum.
'Protecting the shared border remains a priority objective for both ministries, and the low migration levels, close to zero at Romania's borders, confirm that Romania's law-enforcement structures are implementing operational measures and integrated actions to adapt compensatory measures and counter the activities of criminal networks,' Predoiu said, according to a press release from the Ministry of Interior of Romania sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.
Predoiu noted that although the figures are decreasing, international developments marked by complex regional dynamics, with potential impact on flows towards the European Union, require national authorities to continuously monitor the region in order to maintain a rapid response capacity.
The Romanian and Hungarian ministers also reviewed the security situation in Ukraine and Iran, focusing on the operational measures needed to prevent any possible future developments in criminal phenomena associated with these regional evolutions.
'The two officials also addressed issues related to cross-border police cooperation in combating crime, cooperation in the context of the ongoing Schengen Area evaluation missions, as well as combating drug trafficking, a priority for both ministries. Particular attention was also given to road safety in the area of the common border, with both sides agreeing to continue the preventive actions carried out so far, which have produced very good results,' the ministry said.
The discussions also provided a good opportunity to review the progress made in the activities of the two interior ministries one year after the lifting of controls at the internal borders.
'The relationship with the Hungarian Interior Ministry proved to be a strategic one during Romania's accession process to the Schengen Area, and the results of this cooperation clearly show that it is important to maintain it at the same level of consistency and efficiency,' Catalin Predoiu added.
