Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that a party must be consistent and establish its own political directions if it wants to remain relevant on the political stage.

The statements were made in the context of a question regarding the possibility of the PNL no longer back its own leader in order to remain in power alongside the PSD.

"The PNL has many minuses, as all parties have, but I believe that there is an instinct for preservation and if colleagues want this party to remain relevant in the coming years and to do what is possible from its point of view for Romania and for the electorate it represents, then it knows that for this, it is not another party that establishes its prime minister or party leadership. That is a basic aspect. Otherwise, it becomes an annex and it would not be good for one party to be an annex of another, regardless of which parties or which political area we are discussing. (...) A party, in order to remain relevant, must be consistent. It must establish its own political lines. When decisions in a party are not made from the party headquarters, but from other headquarters, that party becomes irrelevant", the prime minister said on Europa FM.

The prime minister emphasized that every political decision of a party has long-term consequences for it.

"I think that if we evaluate the past years, we see that we ended the electoral cycle with the presidential elections with a low score and we must think about what would have happened if it had not been for an important effort for the parliamentary elections, for this party to remain relevant. But the PNL had another quality - with all the things that I told you that we did in these years, for better or worse, when it was difficult, as it was last year, we assumed our responsibility to do what was right for Romania. It is not a comfortable situation, but since we also have a responsibility alongside the PSD for the situation in which Romania has reached in 2025, we assumed this responsibility and did not run away from adopting some measures", concluded Bolojan.
