The Government approved on Thursday a memorandum that provides for urgent measures to ensure the continuity of activities in the conservation phase of uranium mining objectives, in the context of the need to guarantee the safety of the works and environmental protection.
According to a Government press release, the measure targets mining objectives in different stages of conservation, namely Ciudanovita and Lisava - Caras Severin County and Baita Plai Partial, Baita Plai and Avram Iancu - Bihor County.
"Currently, the conservation and monitoring activities of these objectives are essential for preventing environmental risks and maintaining safety in the respective areas. At the same time, the context is influenced by the difficulties registered at the level of the National Uranium Company (CNU), which is in insolvency, which may generate the risk of interruption of these activities. According to the legal framework and based on the information transmitted by the National Commission for the Control of Nuclear Activities (CNCAN), at the national level, activities in the field of uranium mine conservation can be carried out by authorized operators, namely the National Uranium Company, as well as Radioactiv Mineral Magurele Company (RMM), under the conditions of obtaining the necessary authorizations," the press release states.
In this context, the solution of taking over the conservation activities by Radioactiv Mineral Magurele, an operator subordinated to the state, through the State Assets Administration Authority (AAAS), following the transfer of the share package made through Government Decision no. 737/2024, was identified.
"In order to ensure the continuity of activities, it is proposed to transfer to the relevant ministry the technical annexes and dependencies related to the mining objectives, in accordance with the provisions of the Mining Law no. 85/2003 and related legislation, with these to be subsequently managed by the designated operator. Also, the necessary steps will be taken to obtain the authorizations provided for by the legislation in the nuclear field, in accordance with Law no. 111/1996, as well as to develop and approve the annual conservation programs", the cited source informs.
The implementation of the measures will be carried out in stages, through the cooperation of the institutions involved, namely the relevant ministry, RMM, CNU and the Conversmin company, so that the handover-takeover process takes place without any malfunctions, the press release reads.
At the same time, the possibility of developing the activity of Radioactiv Mineral Magurele Co. is envisaged, including by hiring specialized personnel, depending on operational needs and after obtaining all necessary authorizations.
Through these measures, the Government aims to ensure the safe continuity of uranium mine conservation activities, environmental protection and efficient use of resources, avoiding the risks associated with the interruption of these essential activities.
