Fifth evening of protests/Thousands protest in Victoriei Square in Bucharest on Sunday evening

Thousands of persons demonstrated in Victoriei Square, before the Government building, to defend justice independence.

Protesters started gathering on Sunday after-noon at the Fountain at University Square and after 18,00hrs began their march towards Victoriei Square.

They carried placards with messages reading messages reading "Justice without phone calls," "When Savonea saves the corrupt, we save Justice!Revocation," "All for Justice," "Captured Justice/We want it released," "Justice provides protection for the corrupt," "Independent justice," AUR, PSD, CG, POT SOS fans, where are you" Aaa... Lia is calling you? We understood, you 'patriots'!," "I am not scared/We really care/ Down the corrupt bosses," "Resignation," "Stop walking the file, it is not a dog!," "Integrity, not complicity," "We want handcuffs, not apologies," "Je suis Raluca."

During the march that lasted about an hour as well as in the Victoriei Square they chanted "Justice, not corruption," "Out with the mafia," "PSD and PNL the same filth," "PSD, the red plague."

Protesters waved tricolour and European Union flags and used vuvuzelas, drums, loudspeakers and they asked, according to the message written on a placard "Why is Justice corrupted, abusive, on the side of the rich ones, negociable, politicised, on vacation?".

Large flags of Romania and the European Union were unfolded by protesters who also brought a photo of Lia Savonea displaying the message "I provide protection for the corrupt."

Lighting up the phone torches was once again a special moment of the protest on Sunday evening.

This is the fifth consecutive evening in which people have taken to the streets to support the independence of the judiciary.

Over all five evenings, protesters have called for the resignation of the President of the High Court of Cassation and Justice, Lia Savonea, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Catalin Predoiu, the Minister of Justice, Radu Marinescu, and the Chief Prosecutor of the National Anti-Corruption Directorate, Marius Voineag.

The Judicial Inspectorate announced that it is carrying out checks regarding the elements presented in the material published by Recorder, and that a summary of these activities will be presented in the coming days.

The Judges' Section of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) announced on Friday that it had decided to refer the Judicial Inspection to carry out checks in connection with the issues highlighted in the press material broadcast by Recorder.

The Prosecutors' Section of the CSM also announced on Thursday that it would carry out checks regarding the accusations made by several magistrates in the Recorder documentary.

The documentary features several prosecutors and judges, some with their identities protected, who claim that the leadership of the Bucharest Court of Appeal routinely changed judges on panels in order to obtain favourable decisions for individuals accused of corruption. Among the cases analysed are those of Marian Vanghelie, Cristian Burci and Puiu Popoviciu.
