The national defense industry must be part of international production chains, said on Thursday the Minister of Defense, Radu Miruta, who had a discussion in Brussels with Andrius Kubilius, the European Commissioner for Defense and Space.
"We have started a clear approach: through European instruments such as SAFE, Romania has invested money to dismantle several armament factories in the country. This means bringing technology companies together with our local capacities, producing equipment necessary for the Romanian Army together and rebuilding industrial skills that we cannot afford to lose. Once restarted and modernized, these facilities can do more. They can enter European production chains, producing subcomponents for major projects that we cannot develop alone. This way we increase production capacity on Romanian territory, localize more added value in the country and consolidate our strategic autonomy," Miruta wrote on his Facebook page.
He added that such decisions are not made only in Bucharest, but are discussed and established at the European level.
"We have to be where the decisions are made - with arguments, with projects and with seriousness. That's what we are doing. I had a very good discussion with Andrius Kubilius, the European Commissioner for Defence and Space, about the future of Europe's defence capabilities and the role that Romania must play in this joint effort. It is not just about money, but about will, solid partnerships and a clear action plan. I supported, with concrete arguments, why the Romanian defence industry must have a well-defined place in the European architecture. We have infrastructure, we have well-trained people and we have potential. Through programmes such as SAFE or EDIP and through real integration into European industrial chains, we can transform this potential into results," explained the Minister of Defence.
According to him, Europe aims to strengthen its preparedness by 2030, and this objective cannot be achieved without a balanced and competitive industrial base in all member states.
"Romania is ready to contribute - through local development, innovation and active involvement - to a stronger European defense industry. We do our homework at home and defend our interests in Brussels. For a strong, integrated and relevant Romanian defense industry at European level," mentioned Radu Miruta.
