Former President Traian Băsescu believes that the Romanian state must take preventive measures to inform the population about how to act in the event of possible terrorist attacks.
He mentions that if Iran tries to strike American equipment deployed in the bases at Kogalniceanu and Turda, Romania has the necessary military equipment to remove the danger.
"Terrorist attacks carried out by radicalized Islamists or cyber attacks represent another category of risks. Under these conditions, in my opinion, the Romanian state must urgently take preventive measures to inform the population about how to act in the event of possible attacks. Perhaps it would be good for each of us to think about where he and his family will take shelter, if he has money and means of subsistence for two or three days, if necessary," Băsescu wrote on his Facebook page on Monday.
According to the former president, although Romania and Iran have an "old and good" relationship, it is possible that there will be attempts to hit American equipment deployed in the bases in Kogalniceanu and Turda.
"In such a situation, Romania has the necessary military equipment to remove the danger, but no one can guarantee the elimination of all risks," Băsescu also writes.
He specifies that the bases in Kogalniceanu and Turda will not host defensive military equipment. This includes: tanker planes for aerial refueling of fighter/bomber planes, reconnaissance and bombing drones, radars for directing anti-missile systems and fighter jets, etc.
Băsescu emphasizes that the opinions expressed represent a personal point of view and that he did not intend to contradict official statements.
"The content of this post is only a personal opinion generated by the fact that international developments are uncertain primarily due to the unpredictable Trump. Upon express request, Romania made the military bases at Kogalniceanu and Câmpia Turzii available to the US army. The decision is correct and in the long-term interest of consolidating the relationship with the US and Romania's security", highlights the former president.
Băsescu also refers to his post from March 11, when he wrote that "businessman Trump" will have to learn that there is a cost for access to Kogălniceanu for operations in the Middle East.
"For the above risks, I said in my previous post that Trump has to pay. Let's take note! It's no longer free like in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Balkans," adds Băsescu.
Iran warned Romania on Monday that it could face political and legal repercussions after allowing the United States to use bases on its territory for operations against Iran, Iran International reports.
Tehran urges all countries not to get involved in the war, said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei.
