The number of overnight stays by Romanian tourists in Germany reached 1.47 million in 2025, up 5% from the previous year, shows recent data from the German National Tourist Board (GNTB).

According to the cited source, increasingly more Romanians associate Germany with holidays that combine culture, relaxation, gastronomy, nature and authentic experiences. 47% say they are considering a trip to Germany in 2026, with families with children forming the most important target group.

Interest is rising, as 57% of respondents plan to travel abroad in 2026, and nearly half of them are considering Germany, which ranks 4th among preferred destinations. 39% estimate a travel budget of €1,000-€2,000 per person, and 3-star hotels remain the most popular accommodation.

Travel behaviour shows a preference for longer, more flexible trips: families with children account for 40% of those choosing Germany, followed by couples (38%). 61% prefer stays of four nights or more. Air travel is up 6%, and sightseeing is the top activity associated with trips to Germany.

Culinary experiences are among the most sought-after activities for city-break and cultural tourists. The "Culinary Germany" campaign will promote Germany as a diverse and attractive food destination. Interest is already visible in Romania, with 30% of respondents naming culinary holidays as a trend they would consider in 2026.

New travel trends include slow travel (46%), health & wellness holidays (21%) and digital-detox experiences (19%).

The "Season's Greetings from Germany" campaign will continue in 2026, promoting German cities during the winter holidays. Nearly one in five international overnight stays in Germany occurs in November - December, with Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt and Nuremberg among the most visited festive destinations. Christmas market visitors generated €4.17 billion inside event areas and €4.88 billion outside them in 2024, according to the German Association of Trade Fair and Event Organisers.

GNTB also intends to highlight three special themes: 150 years of the Bayreuth Festival, promoting Germany as a cultural destination; "Family and Friends in Nature", aligned with Romanian consumer trends; IGA 2027, one of the world's largest horticultural exhibitions, held in the Ruhr region.

Frankfurt remains highly accessible for Romanian travelers, as five daily flights connect Bucharest and Frankfurt, with a flight time of about two hours, and only 12 minutes by train from the airport to the city centre.

GNTB and Frankfurt Tourism recently held their annual press conference in Bucharest, where Cristian Sallai, manager of the GNTB Office for the Balkans, presented Germany's 2026 promotion strategy and the most recent data regarding the Romanian market. GNTB operates on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action to represent Germany as a tourist destination, and it is funded by the Ministry in accordance with a decision adopted by the German Bundestag.

For 2026, GNTB will promote Destination Germany through four global campaigns and three special themes, focusing on city breaks, culture, gastronomy, sustainability and nature-based holidays. A key initiative is "Your Next Stop: Travel Destination Germany", a three-phase urban-tourism campaign running in March, July and September 2026, featuring an Expedia hub, video content, tailored storytelling, social-media activations, Netflix Pause Ads, B2B communication and PR actions.
