Marius Copil (35) announced on Tuesday his retirement from professional tennis in a post on his Facebook page.
'After many wonderful years on the professional circuit, the time has come to officially announce my retirement from competitive tennis. These have been years full of emotions, challenges and lessons. The last few years have not been easy, but they gave me time to realise how incredible this journey has been. Tennis has shaped my life, given me friends, memories and experiences I will never forget,' said Copil.
The tennis player thanked his family for their support: 'My parents for their sacrifices, my brother for his understanding, my wife for her love and trust, and my mother-in-law for her unconditional support.'
He also showed his gratitude to his coaches and team who helped shape him as a player and as a person, 'to all my Davis Cup teammates, especially Horia Tecau, Florin Mergea, Victor Hanescu, Adrian Ungur, Victor Crivoi, for the moments we shared together,' as well as to Ion Tiriac, Cosmin Hodor, Eric and Stefan Sturdza, Loucas Ellinas, the Romanian Tennis Federation and his godfather.
Marius Copil also thanked his sponsors and fans 'for the love, patience and energy' they have given him.
'Coming from a small town in Romania, I dreamed of playing a match for my country, of reaching the ATP Top 100 and making an ATP final. I can proudly say I've lived 99% of my dream. The time has come for a new chapter - to be a husband, a father and to pass on all that I have learned,' Copil concluded.
Born in Arad on 17 October 1990, Copil played two ATP singles finals during his career, both in 2018, losing one to Roger Federer in Basel and the other to Bosnia's Mirza Baic in Sofia. Marius Copil won one ATP doubles title in 2015 in Bucharest alongside Adrian Ungur.
His best singles ranking was world No. 56 on 28 January 2019, and his highest doubles ranking was No. 182 on 24 August 2015. Copil played his last singles match a year ago in Heraklion, and his last doubles match in May, in Bucharest, alongside Dan Alexandru Tomescu.
