The Zalau local administration marked Holocaust Remembrance Day on Monday through an event held at its headquarters, attended by Israel's ambassador to Romania, Lior Ben Dor, alongside representatives of central and local authorities and cultural figures.
"We had the honor of hosting His Excellency Lior Ben Dor, Ambassador of Israel, Mrs. Maia Morgenstern - the renowned National Theatre actress, as well as representatives of the Romanian Parliament and Government," the Zalau City Hall said in a Facebook post.
The local authorities used the occasion to underline the importance of preserving the memory of Holocaust victims and upholding fundamental human values.
"On Holocaust Remembrance Day, we look not just at the numbers of history, but at the people - the souls behind the statistics. A lesson that teaches us that the right to life and dignity is paramount. Let us be the bearers of memory and humanity, ensuring that these painful lessons guide our actions today and tomorrow," the institution's representatives said.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed on January 27 and is the first universal commemoration dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust, established by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 60/7 of November 1, 2005.
January 27 marks the 1945 liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi extermination camp (today in Poland) by the Soviet army.
