The Iasi City Hall is sending assistance to its twin city of Balti in the Republic of Moldova, which has been left without drinking water following Russian attacks on the Novodnestrovsk hydropower plant in Ukraine, the local authorities announced.

At the request of Balti mayor Alexandr Petkov, Iasi will deliver 100 cubic water containers, each with a capacity of 1,000 litres. The containers will be transported to Moldova and filled with potable water from the ApaVital network in Macaresti, the municipality said in a statement on Tuesday.

In parallel, Iasi mayor Mihai Chirica called on supermarkets, hypermarkets and residents to donate bottled water for the people of Balti, which has been twinned with Iasi since January 15, 2023.

To this purpose, five collection points will be opened starting Wednesday, March 18, that will operate from 9:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 to 14:00 on weekends.

The authorities said the water supply in Balti was cut after the Russian strike on the Novodnestrovsk hydropower plant, which released harmful substances and pollutants into the Dniester River.

"Russia's invasion has crossed every line of humanity, turning into a cynical assault on innocent people. The recent attack on a Dniester hydropower plant, which left entire communities without drinking water, including in the Republic of Moldova, is proof of great cruelty. Our duty is to stand together and take action," mayor Mihai Chirica said, as cited in the statement. "This shipment of water is our gesture of solidarity. We stand with the people of Balti and remain united against any form of aggression," he explained.
