A maritime drone in the Black Sea, located 36 miles east of Constanta and posing a danger to navigation was neutralized by EOD divers from the Romanian Naval Forces during a mission on Wednesday, the Ministry of National Defense (MApN) said in a release.

"The troops of the 39th Diver Center moved to the maritime area estimated at 36 nautical miles east of Constanta, accompanied by the maritime surveillance ship MAI 1.107 of the Coast Guard. After analyzing the drifting object, the soldiers identified it as a Sea Baby-type unmanned surface vehicle (maritime drone). The intervention team received approval to neutralize the object in accordance with operational procedures, and at around 1:00 p.m. the drone was destroyed by controlled detonation," the statement said.

The Ministry reports that since the beginning of the war in Romania's vicinity, the Romanian Naval Forces have been permanently monitoring and supervising the maritime and fluvial area of responsibility, both with ships and aircraft of its own, also in cooperation with the other categories of forces of the Romanian Army and with other states in the North Atlantic Alliance.

"Since February 2022, freedom of navigation has been ensured for more than 12,000 commercial ships transiting the Black Sea basin. Another major threat to maritime security is posed by drifting sea mines. Over the past four years, approximately 150 such mines have been neutralized in the Black Sea, seven of them by the Romanian Naval Forces. Romania is also a member of the Black Sea Mine Countermeasures Task Group (MCM BS TG), alongside the naval forces of Bulgaria and Turkey. During the last six months of this year, the command of the naval group was held by Romanian military sailors," informs the MApN.
